Coming from a mom whose 12 month old shot me with his fingers, I am not sure you can stop that! I have no problem with water guns but we don't allow real guns in the house and I would never buy him a toy that looks like a real gun because of all the trouble he could face at school should he bring it. But we played with squirt guns growing up and I have NO desire to get a real gun or shoot people lol.
I do not like to give kids guns, but I also recognize that kids will make them out of pretty much anything. I'm okay with squirt guns, theoretically, but not those guns that make noise and then end lights up. There are actually no guns in my house, real or fake.
It's funny that you ask this, because we were at the playground yesterday and a child pointed one of those ones that makes noise at my son and it made me very squeamish. S was just worried that it was a squirt gun because he didn't want to get wet.
No. I will never allow my kids to play with toy guns. Adria has never made a gun out of anything, but I also have heard that's more of a "boy thing." But even so, I will never allow my kids to play with guns.

In my house, no. Not at all. There are real guns in our house so guns will never, ever be portrayed as toys, ever.
