D's 12 month appointment and update on our sleeping habits.

So I consider D to be pretty healthy, he eats okay, is really active and happy and generally a healthy normal child. So when I took him to his one year check up I didn't expect the doctor to tell me that he's underweight...um he's 22lbs?!?! That's not underweight, but she says he's in the 30% for weight and 90% for height and he's fallen off his curve for his weight. So I have to take him back for a weight check in 6 weeks, and I'll tell you this whole thing has made me a little nuts. I started to plan menus for him and was going to start packing his lunch and breakfast for the sitter and make her keep a food diary...and then I decided that he's tripled his birth weight, I'm not a big person and when I was child I wasn't either. Dawson is fine. I think, right?!

Now we WERE sleeping through the night, with D in his crib and I was SOOOOOO excited about it. If you're famaliar we've really struggled with sleep the last year...and then I came down with a cold, and D got it and now he has his 4th ear infection in a month and a cold and won't sleep longer than a couple of hours in his crib and then he's up for an hour or so and then will only go back down with me. I'm really upset about it. I just got him sleeping on his own in his crib like a week ago and now this. It effing figures.

Sippy cups, FORGET it. D REFUSES to drink from one unless he's just playing around or it's dinner time. Forget putting his milk in one, he's not having it. All he does is scream. We're going to try again this weekend, I don't expect anything different. We'll see.

They said 22 lbs was underweight!?! That seems odd. Kira was only 23 lbs at her 12 month appointment and had only gained 1 lb since 9 months and they said she was great. I'm starting to wonder if all doctors use different charts. I'm sure you're feeding him just fine - I wouldn't worry too much about it at all. You're a great mommy!

Hey also, Kira doesn't do sippy cups very well at all either - but she's killer with a straw! I've started just giving her milk from a straw or one of those sippy cups that have a straw and so far so good. Maybe give that a try?

Weight checks are the worst! I'm so glad the boys shot right up the charts after the first few months. We have two sippy cup hold outs here too- they like a slow leisurely bottle (don't even get me started on faster nipple flow) and I'm starting to worry they'll still be hanging onto them in August.

I hope the sleep situation gets better soon.

D will do a fast flow bottle great, but sippys not so much. It sucks.but atleast he can hold his own bottle!

Mel- I thought it was weird too. That's what D has gained and I was glad that he was growing, but since he went from the 60-75% to the 30% she wants to check. I do appreciate the caution she has but I think she's being a little extreme about it.

H had a hard time with sippy cups till we found the right one...not sure the brand but they have them at target and they're the lightning mcqueen one, blue cup with a red top and a soft spout. His cousin will only drink from that one too...good luck!!!!

That sucks! B was 19lbs,8oz with a wet diaper on, completely crashed her curve and I feel like they didn't bat an eye. On my own I've decided to load her up on peanut butter . . . AND BEANS!! hahahah!!!

He sure seems like a sweet little thing. I hope he's on the mend soon!

I can't get over the weight thing! 22 seems fine? Our ped is big on being 90+ on height and 30-50 weight because the main problem in this country is childhood obesity? Also, Mags would NOT take a sippy and i stressed over it, and just remember (along with the sleeping issue) that EVERYTHING is temporary. your sleep and sip issues WILL change. give it a month!

WHAT?!? Weight check? Aw, sweets! That doesn't make any sense! Ben is TINY. He was 19 lbs, 6 ounces and in the 10th percentile and his pediatrician said there is nothing to be concerned about in any way, shape or form! She said she sees it all the time at 12 months when they're transitioning to table food only, milk and begin walking. Please don't worry about it. I know Dawson is just fine! You're a great mom! I'm with Jenna on loading Ben up with healthy fats, though. But just like you, Tim & I were both TINY babies, so I'm not concerned in the least.
